EXERCISE 01: GESTALT & CONTRAST

This design was inspired by my childhood cartoon television film, Mr Bean [The Animated Series]. In the episode, where Mr Bean had a bad hair day and he used the black cat to cover up his bald head. From this idea, I develop this visual into a gestalt using only black and white. I focus on the monotone colors because they give a huge contrast that separates the two visual objects from one another as well as uniting the two visual objects as a whole.

This design was inspired by the view, I look at every day when doing online classes. My go-to place to do my online classes is in front of the television. From this, I decided to make a contrast piece, again using monotone colors [black & white]. In between my design process, I wanted to include lines to symbolize the static waves. Looking at the static waves, makes you feel dizzy and almost the feeling of being pulled into another world. Since television gives us entertainment, staring at the TV all day makes you feel dizzy, and also the user tends to get engrossed with the show present on tv.

EXERCISE 02: EMPHASIS / BALANCE/ REPETITION / MOVEMENT

CHOSEN PRINCIPLE: EMPHASIS

This design was inspired by the quote "The Quietest Person has the Loudest Mind." I came across this Korean variety show which showcases young artists that have yet to show their talent on stage. From this concept, I decided to make an Emphasis piece that showcases this idea but instead utilizes the word 'Loudest' as a sign of a creative mindset of a designer. The black silhouette with the finger shushing others symbolizes the word 'Quiet' whilst the colorful center person symbolizes our sub-conscious mind and also with the colors it stands for creativity. The visual objects surrounding the colorful person are in monotone colors because I wanted the tiny person to stand out more than the other objects in the background. However, the visual objects surrounding the person are the ideas & inspiration running around the mind.

CHOSEN PRINCIPLE: MOVEMENT

This design was inspired while I was eating a homemade hamburger. I was interested in the wave-like motions and I thought of digestion which I've learned in Biology. The wave-like motions represent the digestion going on in the body while the human figure is consuming the hamburger. The colors are also similar to the hamburger as it shows each of the ingredients being digested.

EXERCISE 03: HARMONY / UNITY / SYMBOL / WORD&IMAGE

CHOSEN PRINCIPLE: UNITY

This design was inspired by a play and the characters are one of my hometown's famous cuisines (Ipoh Kuey Teow & Caramel Custard). The characters are contrasting to one other as one is hot while one is cold as well as one is the main dish the other is desert. These two characters are lovers and I wanted to show the unity of these two contrasting characters in one composition. In the play, it mentions that the Kuey Teow is being eaten by a human and this piece shows the romantic couple running away from the humans so that they can live as one together without having to worry about being eaten.

CHOSEN PRINCIPLE: WORD&IMAGE

This design was inspired by the movie "Birds of Prey". I'm a huge fan of Harley Quinn and I decided to make this Word&Image piece about her. There are many pop arts of Marvel and DC characters and I wanted to make one of my own for Harley Quinn. I used words that symbolize her character, most of the words are inappropriate and violent but they represent her character in the movie. I also included partial visuals of Harley Quinn herself to make this piece a combination of both words & images.

PROJECT 01: SELF PORTRAIT

In this design, I wanted a piece that represent me. Since I've started joining the course in fashion design, I utilise the idea of a mannequin which is often a symbol that meant fashion. Utilizing this mannequin as my figure and implementing visual features of myself to the mannequin. In this design, it shows me reaching for my glasses. The glasses are a part of me as well because people often view me as a girl with glasses and instead of wearing them in this composition, I reach for them. The glasses are my outer self while the mannequin is exposing my inner self in terms of how I appear in public and at home.

PROJECT 02: SENSE OF PLACE

This design was inspired by where I'm currently staying, KL. As a young girl, I love to venture into the outdoors and KL is my ideal city because of its bustling streets and humongous malls. I really enjoyed staying in the city which is why I wanted to make a composition with this idea in mind for this project. The white figure symbolizes me, my inner self or sub-conscious, that is being embraced by the city views. I've seen the dawn to evening through my windows and I've seen the same city view countless times. I implemented my vision into my design and created an overly of figures with different views of the city from dawn till evening.

FINAL PROJECT: VISUAL ANALYSIS

This design was inspired by Laura Berger's piece 'In My Feelings'. I like her design style of illustration arts and I decided to do an illustrative piece too. Berger's message in most of her artworks here is mainly based on unity, connection, and harmony amongst humanity. This message gave me an idea of doing a piece of me and my sister. My sister and I have different interests, facial features, and personalities as well but we are still sisters by blood. From Berger's message I wanted to show the differences me and my sister have while also showcasing our similarities (bond & connection) as siblings by blood.

FINAL REFLECTION
I've learned mainly about the principles of design and also how to utilize them. I've known the theory about the principles but I've never really understood how to utilize their techniques. This module, helped me to utilize the techniques without me taking notice that I've used the techniques. I enjoyed our classes with Ms Jinchi the most because she is a really fun and interactive lecture. She made me feel comfortable during class instead of being tense and anxious. She was quite open to all of our ideas and she gave us a lot of help in improving our design.

When it came to the projects, I was quite stressed out because I had other assigned workloads from my other modules and it was quite rushing to complete these projects given in this module. However, I'm glad that I'm able to complete all of my projects in time. I can say that doing the projects actually made me explore myself even more as I tend to design things that are from my personal experiences. In the beginning, our first project was a self-portrait followed by the second project, sense of place. These two projects made me think about myself deeply and they made me understand more about myself. Especially throughout this module, doing countless exercises and projects, I can sense my kind of design style.

The thing that changed during this module was my understanding of the principles and my design as well. I won't really use the word change, it is more of an improvement. The feedback I've received made me improve on my work and it also made me see how the principles are used correctly in my design. In terms of what has not changed, I would say my inspiration because as I mentioned earlier my inspiration comes from my personal experiences and I've never really thought of using other inspiration from the internet because it would be harder to comprehend than my own experiences.

Personally, I think there's nothing to be improved in this module because our lecture, Ms Jinchi is very encouraging as well as open to our ideas. She also reminds us to have a neat blog so that our process, from the visual research to our final outcome could be seen clearly. The main objective of this module is to help us develop our skills in using the principles of design and I think with the lecture's help as well as our creativity we are able to achieve this objective. I will say that I've improved a lot from my previous designs and this module helped me gain an understanding of the principles without having to check back.
