Task 02: Sense of Place

LECTURE [05/10]
A designer's role is to solve problems using visuals to communicate the solution. The designer is well-informed about this problem or purpose but how does this purpose spark visual ideas in designers? That's when observation comes in!

OBSERVATION:
Observation is crucial to designers as it enables them to get ideas for the solution to those problems.
  • Be attentive to your surroundings.
  • Pay close attention to details and be as analytical as you want about them.
  • It is an effective way to get ideas and inspiration.
  • Acquiring information through senses.
SENSES:
Our senses are important for us as we can think, feel and understand. It is essential to have these senses as we can even plan what we want to do in our design.

SENSE OF PLACE:
Think of a place you're currently in, or a place that holds countless memories, or a place where you felt like you've belonged or feel comfortable. Start by taking pictures, observing your space.

PROJECT 02
To create a composition that represents your sense of place.

VISUAL RESEARCH
I thought about a place where I felt happy and comfortable. The place I had in mind was my apartment in KL, which served as my accommodation for university.

Figure 1.2 [My Room]

The reason for choosing this place is because I like having my own personal space and I enjoy looking at the city view at night and when the dawn appears. Coming to KL for my studies made me feel really thrilled and happy because I like having the freedom to do what I like and where I go, it makes me feel independent. Every time I look through the window of my room, I see the whole city, and looking at it makes me feel happy.

IDEA EXPLORATION
I thought of my feelings about my chosen place, happiness, freedom, and comfort. I decided to search for some art pieces for some inspiration on how to manipulate myself with my chosen place.

Since my bedside is facing the city landscape, I thought of doing an abstract piece showing how I love viewing the city view from day till night. I took three different photographs of the city view from my bedside, afternoon, sunset, and nighttime.

Figure 2.0 [Night Time]

Figure 1.5 gave me an idea of the layout of my composition. I decided to place an inner subconscious self of mine with the city view hugging me from behind. This expresses my fondness, joy, and love of staying in the city (the city embraces you or accepts you). In Figure 1.6, I had an idea of utilizing the head motion, dropping down. By using the three photographs I took, I decided to make three overlapping shadows of the city hugging me from behind.

Figure 2.2 [Sunset]

Figure 2.3 [Night Time]

I illustrated the three different time slots according to the photographs I took, afternoon, sunset, and nighttime. The reason for choosing these three time periods is because I want to make a flow when utilizing the head motion technique. After illustrating these different city views I clip mask them into a figure (person) and layered each one of them accordingly.

Figure 2.4

Here is my final piece, with the different city views incorporated into each figure. As for the nighttime view, I decided to place it as the background. I decided to keep my sub-conscious white in color because I want it to be my focal point. Using the principle of unity to bring all of these elements together as one (through the focal point in the center). I wanted to ask Ms Jinchi for her feedback on my composition (Figure 2.4) so far.

FEEDBACK
By: Ms Jinchi
"She said that I've very much improved from my initial idea as it portrays the message well. She also said that I can proceed to submit this piece."

REFLECTION
From the title of the project, I could already grasp the concept or theme of this project. I had a lot of thought before starting this project because I was trying to find a place where I felt most comfortable and happy. My final composition was kind of last-minute work because I had a lot of other assignments to deal with but I was surprised at the outcome of my final composition. The layout of my composition was inspired by my two visual references which helped me to compose this piece. I never thought I could include the principle of unity until today, which didn't occur to me while I was illustrating my piece. Overall I'm glad I could finish this project on time and I'm very happy with my final outcome. I could see that I've improved a lot from Exercise 01 up till now. I have grasped the understanding and technique of utilizing these design principles.
