Final Project: Zero Waste Fashion

LECTURE [30/05]
In our last assignment, where we had to create 10 initial designs from the draping technique, Ms Maria said that now we have to devise our mood boards, concept, fabric and styling boards for our collection. Instead of creating the mood boards and etc, we are designing first then only devising the concept or style we are aiming for in this Zero Waste Collection.

FINAL PROJECT
To create a mini collection, consisting of 3 outfits by incorporating Zero Waste Fashion. The whole objective is to minimize fabric wastage at the same time develop unique ideas. With guidance from Industry Mentors.

PROCESS
I started off with the concept board of my Zero Waste Fashion collection as the concept was clear in my mind.

Concept Board [In-Progress]

FEEDBACK
By: Ms Maria
"I like the way how you layout your visuals and images. I really like the wave-like textures in the background but try removing the white spaces in between the lines so that it's cleaner. But this board looks more of a moodboard than a concept board. In a concept board, it should have a short summary of your theme for this collection and your results for the sustainability meter."

Below are my boards (concept board, moodboard, fabric board, styling board for both male and female).

MOODBOARD

My inspiration for the collection is solely based on samurai for the male whilst female is based on traditional Japanese kimonos. The overall feel of this collection is masculine yet graceful. I wanted to go for an East united with West design, to create a fusion of both Western and Asian culture. The color palette I chose is like a monotonous grey tone to reflect on heritage and modernization. I wanted to get that office feel so that it looks professional.

FEEDBACK
By: Mr JR
"The moodboard looks very cramped, remove the pictures on the left to make it less cramped. the figure of the man and women in traditional Japanese clothing should be changed into Caucasian models as it represents East meets West."

CONCEPT BOARD

For the concept board, Ms Maria told me to include a brief summary of my concept and the sustainable meter taken from Najah Onn mentorship session. The theme of my collection is mottO,inai which is a mixture of two words 'motto' and 'mottainai'.

motto; a statement of words or phrase to emphasis on ideals
mottainai; (japanese word) too good to waste

In order for our design to be sustainable, we have to aim for a total of 15 and above. My total for the sustainable meter is 17. Ms Maria aid me in going through Criteria 1-3.

FABRIC BOARD

I decided to do my fabrication board physically instead of digitally because I want the color and texture of my fabric swatches to appear nicely on my board. I also added the different methods of Zero Waste that I used in my collection.

FEEDBACK
By: Ms Maria
"Need to organise your designs in order like 1-3 so that it gives that neat flow. As for the fabric swatches it's best to place the fabrics next to the design that uses that fabric."

FEEDBACK
By: Mr JR
"It looks very cramped up, it should be more cleaner so that it shows the fabrication nicely."

FEEDBACK
By: Kak Zai
"In future, it's best to play with the texture and feel of your fabric because right now, your fabric is quite soft. Try adding thicker fabric next time and do comparisons and experiment with the fabric."

For the fabric board, I decided to add the fabric swatches which I took during fabric shopping. Ms Maria also advised me to include fabric manipulation like the Zero Waste Pattern and Draping technique. I also add in my color palette as well for this collection.

STYLING BOARD

MALE

FEEDBACK
By: Mr JR
"Instead of using formal office shoes, you could use boots with high black socks or those black sandals with black socks."

FEMALE

For the style, I wanted to go with a minimalistic look. I was inspired by @hunterschafer makeup in Euphoria as she played the character Jules. Below are references to her makeup looks. The eye shades that she used below are simple and nude. She also adds a shimmer to the shades.

In my concept board, Ms Maria mention that the hat gear would fit my design. After hearing her suggestion, I decided to add in the hat. Initially, my design plan for the hat was to get a Vietnam-looking hat with white ribbons hanging down starting from the tip. Below are my feedback from my lecturers.

FEEDBACK
By: Ms Maria
"Instead of putting the ribbon outside of the hat maybe do it inside. You could also play with the length of the ribbon-like making it longer at the back and shorter in front."

FEEDBACK
By: Mr JR
"It's better if the hat was black in color because your designs are mostly grey tone. A white ribbon would make it stand out. "
