Task 01: History Analysis

LECTURE [04/04]
The fashion evolution is described as a 'Spinning Wheel' because fashion is always evolving and improving however fashion would never have begun if it weren't for the past. Fashion evolves every 10 years.

There is a difference between clothing and fashion.
Fashion- industry, brands, and labels
Clothing- everyday wear, essential to people's lives

Fashion began in the 19th century when Charles Frederick sewed his own label of garments. Since then other fashion brands begin to evolve and labels were implemented to describe the brand entirely.

Why is History Important?
-It provides the solutions to many problems in the present day.
-Gives insights that aren't visible today.
-Inspiration
-Consolation

From the historical timeline, we are able to see the pattern change of how fashion evolved over time and also the direction. History provides a sense of identity because it answers the question of how it began or started? It also helps us to understand the society and people of that period and why clothing is changed from time to time. Clothes are an expression of who we are.

ASSIGNMENT 01
Students will work in groups of 2 and an era will be raffled for each team from the 16th-19th century. Required to present findings on MIRO board.

PROCESS
Ms Maria assigned us in groups at random using the 'Spinning Wheel' website.

Groups Members:
1. Sharon
2. Aimee

Before starting our research, we both had a group discussion to talk about what we should be researching on and what to include. In class, Ms Maria showed us examples of the senior's work, their boards include the period of time with research on the clothing for both men and women. They also gave an overview of their research and about that period of time.

We were given the period of the 16th Century (at random). I created the MIRO board to begin our research on the 16th Century.

Research:
-Womenswear & Menswear (silhouette, dress code, class, iconic figure)
-Overview of Period
-Summary of Research

We both had some experience with this kind of project so we place some references on the board to discuss it. Since the 16th Century had a number of years, we divided the years equally so that we can research them individually without any confusion.

Ms Maria mention what we needed to include in our research which are menswear, womenswear, kid's wear, or can be changed to accessories/hairstyles, silhouettes or the iconic figure (overview). She also mentions that when we research the clothing for each period we should explain how the trend got there in the first place using real-life events. We arranged columns for each period so that it's easier to list down the information. We had a one-to-one consultation with Ms Maria about our progress so far.

FEEDBACK
By: Ms Maria
"The website link that contains all of the information, try not to copy all of the information. You could search other sources as well. "

MIRO Board:

We gathered all of the information, about the years we were assigned to. Our research consists of the noble's garments from 1500-1599, the evolution of clothing, fashion icon, silhouette, materials and commoner's clothing. We had to present all our research findings and give an overview of what the 16th century is about.

"Overall, the 16th century had a separation of dark and light ages. Between the 1560s clothing started having colors that are vivid and more embroidery, patterns and color combinations are being formed. The silhouette pretty much became more tighter fitting. For men, their silhouette was slender and fitted whilst women are more expanded and fitted/stiff. England clothing develop from other country influences like Spanish (common), France and Italy."

During this assignment as well as hearing the presentation, I learned so much about the garment especially and the evolution of clothing and how fashion was discovered. Whilst researching the 16th century, Queen Elizabeth I captured my attention as she was a monarchy, who accomplished and made England better. Her influence on people was insanely over the top which captured my interest in Elizabeth. I think the spark of the phrase "clothing is an art expression of ourselves" is from Elizabeth I as she implements her own style to her garments and tries to surpass her past dresses in creating newer and better dresses that never cease to amaze others.
