Task 01: Proposal
LECTURE
Week 1: Netnography
Conducted By: Dr Charles
A Netonography collects and analyses data on the free social behavior of individuals on the Internet. The key to this data collection is that it is gathered when consumers are behaving naturally as opposed to research surveyors to which consumers may react to avoid embarrassment or to please the surveyor.
Differences Between Ethnography and Netnography:
Ethnography is when data is collected physically, in which individual studies the cultural customs and people by having direct interviews / environmental studies and etc, to learn and gain knowledge about that custom. The benefits of an ethnography are first-hand experience, face-to-face contact, observation, and participation. The downsides are it takes a while to collect data.
Netnography is when data is collected through the internet, online. The methods that are carried out often research through websites, surveys, online interviews on Zoom and etc. The benefit of netnography is that it's convenient since everyone is dependent on the internet and it's faster to collect data. The downsides are some websites may be blocked, in which data isn't enough or difficult to find.

Week 2: Culture And Us?
Conducted By: Dr Jinchi
In today's lecture, we talked about Michelangelo's painting called Narcissus. Narcissit, in Greek mythology, is the son of the river God and also named Liriope (the name of a low-grass, flowering plant). However, he rejected the hymph echo, or in older versions, the man named Armenius pulled him into the spring waters, making it look like he killed himself.

Culture represents a group of individuals with a collective reservoir of knowledge, traditions, history, attitudes, behaviors, perceptions, society, nations of the time, positions, ideas, tangible things, and qualities accumulated through ages by individual and group strivings. It's a way of life where most people generally accept or don't even realize what they're doing. These customs are passed down from generation to generation and through word of mouth.
Week 3:
No lecture session, continue with proposal progress
INSTRUCTIONS
PROJECT 1: PROPOSAL
We formed a group that consisted of 7 members,
1. Michell [Leader]
2. Emma (Hasyimah Ismail)
3. Owen (Ng Veyhan)
4. Steffi
5. June (Chai Yi Xuan)
6. Liu Pei Yi
7. Faith Aimee
In our first meeting, we brainstormed ideas and we narrowed it down to 'Fashion Culture'. However, the topic in general, that we've all agreed on, was too broad so we decided to research more specific fashion cultures. We made a miro board to gather our ideas together. We also skimmed and scanned what we should include in our proposal.
Our final decision for the topic is 'Cosplay Culture'. We chose this topic because it was an interesting and unique type of fashion that originated from anime and mangas, comics, video games, and etc fictional characters.
We proceed to research the cosplay culture in-depth and also build up our proposal.
Investigations on Cosplay Culture:
- What is Cosplay?
- History (how did it originate)
- Practices of Cosplay / mainly in Japan
- Barriers of Entering Cosplay
- Issues
The Google Documents contains our research on Cosplay as well as our proposal progress.

After our research stage, we split the task to do for the proposal slides. Steffi created the slides for us to add in our information for the proposal.
FEEDBACK
By: Mr Asrizal
"Research questions are too vague, as the answers will not benefit your research. The questions are not accurate as there is too much assumption on cosplay. Minimize your questions to 3 (should be enough)."
After getting feedback from Mr Asrizal, each of us had to think of one research question and objective so that we can discuss each one of our ideas and narrow it down to 3 questions and objectives each.
We also had to complete our preliminary ideas, so we open the floor to all of our members to add in ideas for our final outcome, regarding cosplay culture.
Mr Asrizal wanted us to do a recorded video presentation of our proposal slides. Each one of us recorded ourselves, with the slides we are tasked to speak on. After doing that, Michell combined the videos together along with the slides.
