Final Project: Essential Fashion

FINAL PROJECT
We are to create an Essential Fashion capsule collection that consists of 15 different looks according to our chosen theme. From the 15 looks, it will be narrowed down to two looks (depending on how many pieces each look has) which one will be in the making into an actual garment in Pattern Drafting and Garment Making class.

GUIDELINE
1. Identify and understanding your target market, who are you designing for?
2. Find your muse, your muse will be someone that is the representation or inspiration for your collection.
3. Creating your concept board. The concept board can be broken down into three parts: color, texture, and overall theme.
4. Drafting and sketching your 15 looks for the collection. (Make sure that muse must be sketched out either manually or digitally)
5. Finalize your 15 looks (includes color, detail, full-body garment)
6. Discuss with your lecture the 4 designs that you'll be considering when making the garment.
7. Selecting your fabric, choose the right choice of fabric which fits your garment and theme.
8. Create a fabric board and swatches.
9. Create a technical drawing or flat drawing (front and back view) for the final 4 designs and adding details such as stitches, opening, texture, and embellishment).
10. Completing the overall look. Taking a finalized photo of your garment (full) with good lighting and background.

In Week 6's lecture, Ms Maria told us to prepare guideline 1 to 3 which is target market, muse and the concept board for our theme. I wanted to make my theme different from what I did in Project 1 and 2 and I also considered garment making since it is my first time producing a garment I didn't want the garment to be overly complex because it would be harder to sew.

To begin, I started searching for my muse for my collection. I came across Kendall Jenner who is one of America's highest-paid models and she starred in a TV reality show called Keeping Up With The Kardashians. I came to know more about Kendall when watching the reality show, and I watched her grew up among her family. I really admired Kendall as a model and an icon of the fashion world.

Muse Board

After choosing my muse for my collection, I moved on to my target market. I aimed towards women who are aged 18-24 years old because many women in those age ranges are appealed to Kendall Jenner's style. There are a couple of young Youtubers and active influencers who recreate Kendall Jenner's fashion style. Seeing as Kendall is a young woman who started her modeling career since she was 16 years old.

Target Market Board

In terms of lifestyle and location, I wanted to make casual outfits that can be worn on days-offs or vacations. I choose common areas where young women may spend their day at, like cafes, markets, parks and etc.

Target Market Moodboard

I thought about UNIQLO where the brand serves its consumers with comfortable clothing for everyday living. UNIQLO's clothing line is quite basic and simple. From this thought, I built a direction of the style I'm going for in this collection. My collection is called Bri:Zi which means relaxed, informal, loose, and airy. The color swatches I'll be using for this collection are mainly earthy and natural tones because these colors have a chill feel that makes one feel at ease. The texture I'm going for is something quite cozy, soft, and breathable.

In terms of the design of the garment, the main keywords are breathable, comfortable, loose and exposed.

Concept Board

In Week 7's lecture, Ms Maria reviewed my muse, target market, and concept board. She told us to prepare 15 garment ideation designs for next week's review, we have the option to do it either manually or digitally but all models should be our chosen muse.

FEEDBACK
By: Ms Maria
"Change the income, in the target market, from mid-range to low-mid range and include the word dependent as my targetted age range consist of students. For the target market moodboard, change a few images to make the theme look more fun than casual relaxed. Ms Maria told me that she loved my moodboard design and she suggested using a wider range of colors that are similar to my 8 color swatches."

I changed my income range, in the target market slide, to low-mid (dependent), according to Ms Maria's feedback.

Target Market [Newly Revised]

As for my target market moodboard, I replaced some of the images to fit the main theme of my collection. Compared to my moodboard before this is much more relaxed and casual.

Target Market Moodboard [Newly Revised]

I moved on to sketching my 15 designs. When designing my 15 outfits, I constantly referred to my concept board as well as search for some unique ideas on how to design my garments.

Once I've completed my 15 sketches, I showed them to Ms Maria, to ask for feedback.

FEEDBACK
By Ms Maria
"My feedback from Ms Maria was that my sketches look tight formal. It doesn't relate much to my theme. Her suggestion was to not use too many dresses or bareback."

This is one of the designs she chose (out of my 15 sketches). She mentioned that she liked the style of this garment and asked me to develop from this idea, to redo my other designs.

Chosen Design

I did some research on styles relating to my chosen theme, on Pinterest. The keywords I used, in my research, are effortless, lazy, loose, and casual. I thought of loose clothing and different collar necks for each design. Since I mentioned my designs will be more open, there shouldn't be too much coverage on the body.

Sketches 3 [New]

Ms Maria approved of these designs and I can proceed to sketch my 15 designs digitally on Illustrator. Before that, I need to create my muse as I will be illustrating my 15 designs on my muse. My muse is Kendall Jenner, I traced out her facial features such as her eyes, lips, and nose. She had long and curvy eyelashes from top to bottom so I traced out the lashes from the top to the bottom a little. As for the hair, I put her iconic style which is the straight and long style. I tried finding her body figure and also tracing it out so that later I could connect the head to the body.

I illustrated the 15 designs onto AI (Adobe Illustrator) with details included such as the clothing folds and any buttons/zippers/pockets.

From my 15 sketches, Ms Maria chooses 3 garments of mine to further develop into a garment. Below are the three chosen designs.

Before making the actual garment, I have to do a technical sketch of each garment showing the back and front view in color and black & white. For the 3rd outfit, before it was a two-piece garment but Ms Maria mistook it as a one-piece garment so I had to make modifications to the 3rd outfit. I made the 3rd outfit into a jumpsuit with two colors.

FEEDBACK
By: Ms Maria
"Ms Maria suggested using hooks&eye as a fastening for my vest (Outfit #1) as for the V-neck knee-slit dress (Outfit #2) she suggested putting the knot string holders at the side."

Technical Sketch Outfit #1 [Modify]

I decided to remove the darts for the pants because I plan to add a zipper and a hook&eye fastener at the back so that it secures firmly onto the model's hips.

Technical Sketch Outfit #2 [Modify]

From Ms Maria's suggestion, I modified my technical sketches for Outfit #1 and #2. In Mr Riza's class, I did the toile for Outfit #2 but the outfit couldn't be worn so he suggested using an opening (zipper). I included Mr Riza's suggestion as well to my tech sketch (Outfit #2).

In Week 10, Ms Maria and I discussed my fabric for the final garment pieces. I choose Linen as my main fabric because it is cozy and comfy to wear and it draws heat away from the clothing which makes it cooler as well as breathable during the summer weather. She asked me to create a fabric board so that it shows the type of fabric I'm going for my final garment pieces.

Fabric Board

In Week 11, Ms Maria showed us the final project slides template which we are supposed to use for our final presentation at Mayamode studio. As I scanned through the slides I realise there is a section for a color board and a moodboard. I decided to make both boards in Canva. Since I've comprehend my theme for this project, I knew the whole concept of this theme as well as the colors I'm using for my designs.

FEEDBACK
By: Ms Maria
"My feedback from Ms Maria, was to have a fixed color combination as it was too overwhelming. She mentioned that the color, that I choose, will be included in the 15 designs which means that the color has to follow for every single board."

I followed the color palette from my concept board, to include it into my moodboard and color board. Since those were the colors that I used in my 15 designs.

FINAL GARMENT PHOTOSHOOT
After completing the garments in our module, Introduction to Pattern Drafting & Garment Making, we had a photoshoot session where the model is wearing our garments and showcasing its appearance on camera.

Garment #1:
A two-piece garment that consists of a somewhat vest top paired with waist-fitted flared pants. The two colors give a nice overall contrast to the garment, utilizing natural colors relating to nature/mother nature. Comfy wear and easy to slip on clothing that is stylish and basic. Also very much open and free as to no sleeves and the loose-fitting on the pants.

Garment #2:
A one-piece garment, that is a V-open neck dress with a knee-slit at the right. The color gives a modern feel and classic look, as it is a natural color (relating to mother nature). The dress is easy to wear and the string supporting the dress is also easy to tie (not too complicated). It gives an overall elegant and sexy look which is appealing. Very much exposed and free as the garment has no sleeves and it is slit at the chest area as well as the knee area.

Garment #3:
A one-piece garment, that is a jumpsuit consisting of two different colors that are contrasting to one another. The two colors give an outstanding contrast which is attractive as to one being light while the other is darker. The two combinations of colors give the outfit a modern and stylish yet basic look. Easy to slip on clothing as well as comfortable. It is open and free as there aren't any sleeves, a looser armhole as well as short pants. This design is open to all styles as it is casual not too feminine and not too tomboy.

REFLECTION
At the beginning of this project, I thought a lot about the garment-making process because I'm still new to sewing an actual garment myself. This thought, it has allowed me to think of this concept called Bri Zi. I wanted Kendal Jenner to be my muse because I wanted to create garments that are inspired by her choice of style and color. I'm very happy and proud of my final outcome and it looks amazing on the models. I hope to design more interesting garments in the future.
