Exercise 02: Dart Manipulation

LECTURE [15/09]
In today's lecture, we learned about dart manipulation which is a common technique used by designers. This technique allows designers to be creative in moving and shifting the pattern block to create a unique piece of garment. The darts on the pattern block can be moved or shifted around by two different types of methods:

PIVOT
By marking a center point on a dart and turning the pattern block in different directions marking the dart in a new position. This method gives access to a 360-degree turn.

SLASHING & SPREADING
This method is done by outlining the pattern block onto another mahjong paper and marking each dart position. The dart marking can be cut and folded to make a new pattern piece.

SEWING COMMON SEAM
A seam refers to the stitching line where two fabrics are stitched together. The stitching line is called the seam line.

SEAM ALLOWANCES
It is the area between the fabric edges and the seam line.

EXERCISE 02
Produce 4 samples of dart manipulation using either the Pivot or Slash & Spread method.

I decided to use the Pivot method because it looked much easier to do rather than slash & spread. I tried all of the dart manipulation methods that are shown in the picture above and I narrow it down to my 4 chosen samples which are armhole dart, centre front dart, french dart, and waist dart.
